A Personal Pilgrimage: Revisiting Our Love Story in Germany

Updated: Aug 6, 2025

Some journeys take you forward—and some bring you home.

A short time ago (depending on your perspective), Andre and I boarded a Delta business class flight bound for Germany. But this wasn’t just another international getaway. This was a pilgrimage—back to the little riverside town where our story as husband and wife began.

Relaxing mid-flight, Andre enjoys a peaceful rest with eye mask and headphones on the trip from Detroit to Frankfurt.

🏰 Chapter One: Cochem, the Town of Our Wedding

We were married on September 21, 2008, inside the majestic walls of the chapel at Cochem Castle. Draped in fairytale regalia, surrounded by love, history, and the scent of autumn vineyards, it was a moment suspended in time. As part of our ceremony, Andre was officially knighted, making our wedding not only unforgettable but beautifully unique.

This time, we returned as husband and wife—older, wiser, and still deeply connected to the magic of that day. We checked into the bridal suite at Hotel Brixiade (https://moselstern.de/buchen/), just across the Mosel River. From our balcony—the same one we stood on that wedding night—we had an unobstructed view of the castle glowing over the town like a guardian of memories.

Andre and I are going back to the start at the Hotel Brixiade. Our suite is located at the top middle of the charming building, providing us with a delightful view and a cozy atmosphere.

We poured glasses of wine, leaned into each other, and sat in quiet reflection as the river flowed beneath us. There’s something incredibly grounding about returning to where it all began. The past doesn’t just come alive—it softens everything.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Chapter Two: From Romance to Family—Jungingen

After a few days wrapped in memory and misty river views, we headed south to Jungingen, a sweet little town nestled in the German countryside. Our hearts shifted from romance to reunion as we spent time with Andre’s son and grandchildren, soaking in all the joy that family brings.

We stayed at Fischer’s Hotel Garni (https://hotel-garni-moessingen.de/) in Mössingen—a cozy, charming spot that perfectly captured the essence of small-town German hospitality. Tucked beside a local Brauhaus, the inn felt like a hidden gem. The beer was crisp, the space unpretentious and inviting, and the atmosphere carried that rare blend of slow living and authentic connection. It was exactly the kind of place that reminds you to breathe, smile, and just enjoy the moment.

There’s something restorative about these quieter corners of the world. Places not listed on top-ten travel lists. Places where you can simply be.

🎈 Chapter Three: Chasing Balloons and Bedtime Stories

One golden evening in Jungingen, just as the sun began to dip low, we spotted a hot air balloon rising in the distance. Without hesitation, we all piled into the car and drove out to get a closer look. The kids pressed their faces to the windows, pointing and shouting with excitement as the balloon floated peacefully above the countryside. It was one of those quiet, unexpected detours that turns into a highlight.

When we returned to their home, the energy settled into something softer. Just before Andre and I left for our hotel, our grandson picked up a Spider-Man book and began to read aloud. With the kind of calm focus that stops you in your tracks, he brought the superhero to life—his voice steady, clear, and full of quiet confidence.

We all listened intently, wrapped in the rhythm of his storytelling. Somewhere between the webs, villains, and hero moments, there was something even more powerful unfolding—a boy finding his voice, and a family taking it in with pride and awe. That moment, touched by evening light and full of presence, stayed with us long after we said goodnight.

🏀 Chapter Four: Brown Opa, Buckets & Buzzers

The next day, we returned for a full day with the family—and it brought nothing but joy. Andre, lovingly known as “Brown Opa,” headed out with our grandson for a round of basketball in the courtyard. This wasn’t just play—it was real effort, real shots, and real celebration. Our grandson dribbled with intent and aimed with determination, making several baskets that had us all cheering from the sidelines. Opa matched his energy, encouraging each shot with the patience only a grandfather can give.

Later, inside, our granddaughter declared it was game time—and pulled out Operation. That buzzy, nerve-wracking board game had us all leaning in, tweezers in hand, trying to avoid lighting up Sam’s bright red nose. The tension was real, but the laughter was louder. Our granddaughter couldn’t stop giggling, especially when someone’s shaky hand triggered the buzzer and sent the whole table into shrieks of laughter.

Brown Apa joyfully plays Operation with his grandchildren, creating a fun-filled and memorable afternoon together.

These weren’t just activities—they were the kind of grounded, joy-filled memories that travel rarely promises, but family always delivers.

🌍 A Journey Measured in Heartbeats, Not Miles

This trip reminded me that luxury isn’t always about five-star labels or exclusive perks (though let’s be honest—I do love those too). Sometimes, luxury is standing still in a moment so rich with memory, it takes your breath away.

Travel has the power to transport us, but it also has the power to return us to ourselves.
